THE HOBBYCENTER

The Hobby Center Houston for the Performing Arts is a must-see, must-attend, state-of-the-art entertainment complex.  Designed by Robert A. M. Stern, this $102 million shining star illuminates Houston's Theater District.   Conveniently located in the heart of downtown, the Hobby's sweeping architecture plays up its fabulous location.  The glistening facade features 60-foot-high glass walls affording exciting vistas of Houston's skyscrapers, interspersed with the lush greenery of Tranquility Park and the distinguished deco-era City Hall.

Come see great shows at Hobby Center Houston like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Radio City Christmas Spectacular and Wicked the Musical.

The soaring three-story Grand Lobby - open, inviting and contemporary - is topped with a majestic roof, supported by tubular steel columns which punctuate the facade, lending drama to the exterior.  A block-long, second-floor terrace offers another brilliant stroke, providing a preferred spot to contemplate the panorama.

Since its opening in May 2002, this visionary venue has been wooing crowds with distinctive programming and a splendidly enlightened building.

Sarofim HallSAROFIM HALL

The ornate opulence of historic European and Broadway theatres is recalled in the handsome interior of the 2,650-seat Sarofim Hall.  Hobby Center architect, Robert Stern was inspired by legendary theatre designers Herts and Tallant, architects of distinction who practiced in Manhattan during the early twentieth century.

Luxury and fantasy reign, as the Sarofim’s gilded interiors invoke a gazebo under a starry, starry night. Sumptuous golden latticework wraps around the hall, while multi-storied, gold-leaf columns contrast with dramatic midnight blue walls. The crowning touch is above - the Joe and Lee Jamail Celestial Dome Ceiling, a breathtaking ellipse featuring twinkling fiber optic stars that replicate the Texas night sky. (Watch for a shooting star that arrives every five minutes!)

Every interior appointment has been carefully considered, contributing to outstanding acoustics and amplified sound: the fabric in the seats, the materials on the walls, the ceiling’s configuration.

The theatre offers three tiers: orchestra, mezzanine, and upper gallery. In this setting, intimacy is heightened, as the farthest seat in the balcony is just 128 feet from the stage. Private boxes, nestled close to the curtain, provide a lovely nook for taking it all in.

Each behind-the-scenes element - orchestra pit for 60 players, mammoth stage traps with hydraulic lifts for hoisting scenery and performers - ensures that the most lavish productions can play Sarofim’s Ruth B. Bauer Stage.  Sarofim Hall is home to the Hobby's two resident companies, Theatre Under The Stars and Broadway in Houston.  Houston arts patrons can savor the best in musical theatre without leaving the Lone Star State.

Don't miss Wicked at Hobby Center Houston.

Zilkha HallZILKHA HALL

Featuring the same backstage amenities as Sarofim Hall (except on a smaller scale), the 500-seat, two-level Zilkha Hall serves up excellent natural acoustics amid a warm contemporary environment enlivened by rich, walnut wood accents.  Originally conceived as a black box theatre, the design of the hall evolved into that of a proscenium theatre with full orchestra pit as its mission clarified.

Zilkha Hall is home to Uniquely Houston®, one of the most innovative programs of its kind in the world. This community-based program features the area’s rich-in-talent, emerging, nonprofit performing arts organizations providing them a state-of-the art home. Mission accomplished.
